Last fall, Starbucks and Arizona State University joined forces to create the Starbucks College Achievement Plan (SCAP) which offers Starbucks employees full tuition reimbursement for Juniors and Seniors through ASU’s online bachelor’s program. I was lucky #1 – the very first student to enroll in the program. For me, SCAP was a game changer. I had always planned on earning my degree and initially enrolled in college right after high school thinking I would graduate in four years. However, the cost was just too much and after just two years, I left school to move back in with my parents.
I remained motivated but didn’t have the resources to head back to school – until the SCAP plan was announced. Applying for the program was straightforward and simple, and I heard back in just a few days on my acceptance into the program. With enrollment counselors devoted specifically to SCAP students and plenty of resources to support me in reaching my goal, I knew I was set up for success.
Now over half a year into the program, I’ve created a schedule that allows me to maintain my full-time position with Starbucks while earning my degree. On a typical day I work from 4 a.m. to noon, take a break for myself to head to the gym or rest and then jump online in the afternoon to study. I was worried about managing a full course load with my work schedule, but after taking the orientation class and beginning my classes, I’m a lot more confident and excited about finishing my degree. For me, the flexibility is key to my success.
Nearly half of the students in the U.S. who start college today will not finish. This is largely due to costs and work/life balance. Without this program, I would have easily been part of that statistic. The Starbucks College Achievement Plan has uniquely allowed me to work full time while successfully going to school full time. I can now confidently say I will not become part of that statistic. As I continue on my journey to earn my degree, I remain in constant appreciation of this opportunity and program!
The Starbucks College Achievement Plan is now expanding! Starbucks and ASU announced they will now offer the same tuition assistance for qualified Freshman and Sophomores that they have been offering to Juniors and Seniors. This announcement will allow more people to have the same opportunity as Allison to complete their degree online!
